Our Karate History
Goju-Ryu, "the hard-soft style," was founded in Okinawa, Japan by Chojun Miyagi. MKK East carries that lineage forward as the premier Eastern Suburbs karate dojo, connecting Woollahra and Bondi Junction directly to Japanese martial arts heritage.
MKK East is a Goju-Ryu karate school with a rich history rooted in the teachings of Chojun Miyagi. Our dojo is dedicated to preserving traditional karate while fostering a competitive spirit, the same balance of go (hard) and ju (soft) that defines the style itself.
We maintain a genuine, ongoing connection to Japan: our instructors continue to train with, learn from and grade under the tradition's source, so what is taught on our mats in Woollahra is the same karate that has been taught for generations.

Miyagi Kan Karate East (MKK East) is a premier martial arts school in Woollahra, moments from Bondi Junction, and the leading destination for Eastern Suburbs karate, teaching both traditional Goju-Ryu karate and modern WKF competition martial arts.
Our syllabus is rooted in the teachings of Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju-Ryu, and we maintain an active, ongoing connection to Japan, preserving authentic kata, kihon and bunkai as they have been taught for generations. At the same time, our coaching team includes current and former Oceania champions and a WKF World Championship top-8 finisher, so students who want to compete train with people who have stood on international podiums themselves.

Yes. Many members join our martial arts school specifically for practical self defence classes. You will learn situational awareness, effective self-defence techniques, and boundary setting while developing full-body fitness.
Our Little Ninjas program welcomes young children from age 4, with Juniors, Teens and Seniors classes as they grow. Every new student gets two free trial classes with no commitment.
No. Classes are structured so complete beginners train safely alongside experienced students. Fitness, flexibility and technique build week by week.
Yes. Our Goju-Ryu syllabus follows the teachings of Chojun Miyagi and we maintain an active connection to Japan, so gradings and technique stay true to the source.
